BRANKO CRVENKOVSKI

PRESIDENT OF SDSM


Personal data:

Born on 12 October 1962 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. His family returned to Skopje in 1963. Married to Jasmina and father of Ljupco and Marija.

Education:

Completed primary and secondary school in Skopje. In 1980 he enrolled at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies, Information Technology and Automatics Department. He graduated in 1985.

Speaks English fluently.

Party career:

In 1990 he became a member of the Presidency of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM). He was Chief of SDSM Election Headquarters at the first parliamentary elections in 1990.

In April 1991, Crvenkovski was elected President of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) and reelected to the position in 1995, 1999 and 2003. He headed SDSM until 2004 when he was elected President of the Republic of Macedonia.

Five years later, after completing his presidential mandate, Branko Crvenkovski was reelected President of the party at the IX Congress of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia held on 24 May 2009.

Political career:

Branko Crvenkovski’s active political career started in 1990, when he became member of the Presidency of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM). He was elected MP at the first parliamentary elections in 1990. Branko Crvenkovski was the first president of the Assembly’s Foreign Policy Committee.

As MP in the first composition of the Macedonian Assembly, Crvenkovski was signatory of the initiative for calling referendum on Macedonia’s independence.

In 1992, following the vote of no confidence to the first Government of Experts headed by Prime Minister Nikola Kljusev, Branko Crvenkovski became President of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia.

At the age of 29, he was the youngest head of government in Europe. As Prime Minister and politician, Branko Crvenkovski was the first to promote the idea for participation of Albanian parties in the Government of the Republic of Macedonia. He managed to establish wide coalition with the Liberal Party, the Socialist Party and the Party for Democratic Prosperity, which represented the ethnic Albanian electorate.

Following the declaration of independence, the Republic of Macedonia encountered difficult economic and political situation, with high inflation rate, considerable social pressure and lack of sufficient international support. The Governmental coalition managed to stabilize the economy and launched the privatization process.

Crvenkovski’s first mandate as President of the Government was incomplete and lasted to 1994, when the second parliamentary elections took place.

SDSM won 59 parliamentary seats of a total of 120 at the 1994 Parliamentary Elections. It was the second mandate for SDSM in coalition with the Liberal Party, the Party for Democratic Prosperity and the Socialist Party. Crvenkovski as a leader of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia heading the winning coalition re-claimed confidence to preside over the Government.

In the period 1994-1998 Macedonia succeeded in becoming member of a number of international organizations such as the United Nations Organization (UN), OSCE and the Council of Europe. Furthermore, agreements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank were signed. Crvenkovski’s second government promoted democracy, implemented important economic reforms and attracted foreign investments. The first steps towards the Euro-Atlantic integration of Macedonia were taken in that period. Namely, Macedonia became member of the NATO Partnership for Peace, and signed the SOFA Agreement and the Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement with the European Union.

After being defeated at the 1998 Parliamentary Elections, Branko Crvenkovski returned to the Assembly, this time as head of opposition. After to the events that led to 2001 military conflict, the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia joined the Government of Political Unity which was established to bring to an end the crisis in the country.

In August 2001, joined by then Prime Minister and leader of VMRO-DPMNE, Ljubco Georgievski, the leader of the Party for Democratic Prosperity, Imer Imeri, the leader of the Democratic Party of Albanians, Arben Xhaferi and President Boris Trajkovski, Crvenkovski signed the Ohrid Framework Agreement.

SDSM returned to power at the 2002 Parliamentary Elections together with the partners from the coalition “Together for Macedonia”. The Social Democrats and their political allies won 60 parliamentary seats of a total of 120, and Branko Crvenkovski reclaimed the mandate to head the Government of the Republic of Macedonia.

In the course of this mandate, Crvenkovski as President of the Government submitted the application for full membership of the Republic of Macedonia to the European Union.

After being elected by citizens at the 2004 Presidential Elections, Branko Crvenkovski assumed the highest duty in the State, President of the Republic of Macedonia.

During Crvenkovski’s presidential mandate, the Republic of Macedonia was granted candidate status for accession in the European Union.
